Chevrolet Camaro

Chevrolet Camaro entered the scene in 1967 as a reply on Fords huge success with the Mustang.

The Ford Mustang was built to attract the first generation after the second worldwar growing up old enough to buy cars.

Even if the first generation of Camaros was designed in a hurry if was quite successfull.

In 1970 the second generation came, a bit late and people some call it a 70-and-a-half.

The musclecar peak era was in 1970 and as an option you could order the 1970 Camaro with the mythic LS6, a 454 pumping out 450 hp´s.

This is some 1971 newspaper advertises:

When the 1971 Camaros arrived the pollution restrictions had also entered the world with lowered compression and the muscle car era was over for this time, at least talking about factory built cars, in the streets the V8 powered cars kept on ruling the scene for a lot of years...

More than 114.000 1971 Camaros where built, over 11.000 with a straight six cylinder engine and more than 104.000 left the factory with a V8 engine.

The customers could buy their cars with a number of different options and engines up to the 402 cubic inch bigblock engine that only was available combined with the SS package. No more than 1533 of the SS396 (the engine was really an 402) was built.

Popular options where the Z21, called the RS package, including some different styling, a split front bumper and some other visible styling upgrades.

The Z28 option was the performance package, the strongest engine, a 350 pumping out 330 hp´s, front disc brakes, wheel stabilizers frond and back, additions that underlined the performance approach. 4862 Camaro Z28 was built in 1971.

The Z27 option was the SS package, better brakes, double exhaust, 7 inch wheels and some visible upgrades as split front bumpers, hide- away windscreen wipers and, as the top option, the 402 LS3 bigblock engine, only available combined with the SS option, not in the Z28.

In 1971 only 1533 Camaro SS396 was built.
