Charlie, the man, the myth, the legend...
Some signs indicates that Charlie bought the car in Illinois in the northeast of USA, see the label in the rear window.
The owner that followed Charlie found one Illinois licence plate in the car, no one are certain if the plate have followed the car from US or if the plate is totally wrong.
Charlie was living in Södertälje making bussiness with repairing used forklifters. According to some persons memories the car may have been sent to Sweden without the engine and gearbox, this in order to reduce the taxes and fees at the border.
To take the Camaro to a pleasant approach Charlie chose to engage a painter to a show paint on, and he also ordered new interior from a upholstery.
Another artist took on the pinstriping and the Midnight Special sign and the paint was covered with 7 layers of clear coat.
In 1982 when the car was finished Charlie had no money to pay for the work, it was quite much money at that time. The interior guy refused to return the car unless the work was paid for so the car stood for quite a long time.
If the memory serves Tore well he believes that there was an engine and a gearbox in the car at the time, the engine was quite hot at the time.
Frequent calls to the owner was called to make him pay and get the car but he didn´t show up for long a time, and finally the painter and the upholstery guy decided to sell the car in order to get paid for the work. The day the sales ad was put in the newspapers Charlie showed up to pay for the work and to get his car, this was probaly in the end of 1982.
The sad part of it all was that during the long time the car stood put away the authorities had changed the rules for imported cars, taken to Sweden without a correct title. There where no legal way for Charlie to get to register the car and he totally lost the interest in the car, sold the drivetrain and put the car away in a corner of his workshop.
Over the years the car became more and more covered up with dust and dirt and on top of it all, a thin, red layer of orange paint coming from Charlies forklifter repairs in the other end of the shop. In the end of 999 Charlie lost it totally and found Benny Björk who bacame the next owner of the car, after eighteen years in a carner, not able to use.
